Understanding the business
Founded in 1961, Plantronics built its business by capturing the growing demand for communications headsets in commercial applications, including aviation and corporate call centers. Neil Armstrong's landmark 1969 “one small step...” broadcast from the moon was made using a Plantronics headset. And while that may have gotten Plantronics into history books, it's the proliferation of headsets—from call centers to game consoles to home computers—that has made Plantronics' star rise to a market cap of more than $2 billion and sales of more than 15 million units in 2004.
